In earlier times, women were very much a part of the 'private sphere'. Overall, women's roles were domestic, and their ideas or apprehensions were thought to be unimportant. Societal female gender roles--to be submissive, pious, pure, obedient-- impeded women's beliefs and actions.
When it comes to women and inventions, it hasn’t been an easy road to travel. Throughout history and even today women have been faced with stereotypes of not being able to do what the man does. Fighting through hard times, through name calling, through disbelief, women have prevailed, and no matter if they were called weird, or not normal or even being thought of as behaving like a man women have stuck through it all, not only to make it out of all the stereotypes but to lead the way for future women of inventions. “True equality cannot be attained until women can accept criticism without taking the easy route of complaining about gender bias” (Fara)
